Day 242: By Request, 12th & 42nd

I asked on Facebook, "what corner of this lovely city should I photograph today" and Andrew McKillip pointed me to 12th Ave and 42nd Street... so here it is. This is, astonishingly enough, one of the few street corners in this city that I actually have photographed before.

Day 241: Trying Fort Tryon

On Matt's suggestion that the hurricane had cleared out the smog, I went up to Fort Tryon for the first time. Got a few too many work calls while I was there so I didn't stay long but it's a beautiful place that I need to revisit, certainly in the fall when the leaves have changed.

This photo is completely unedited, fresh out of the camera. Amazing color.

Day 240: Notsomuchtermath

The most significant damage I could find.

Irene arrived as a tropical storm, with less wind punch than anticipated. Lots of rain so there's some flooding downtown.

For my part I'm glad for the test run of my emergency preparedness (which is lacking).

Day 239: Cabin Fever

Pretty much sums up Saturday, laying around waiting for anything at all to happen.

Day 238: Disaster Prep

Getting ready for the hurricane!

And more, Whole Foods line.

Day 237: Calm Before

So we've got a hurricane bearing down on us. Don't expect posting right away from Saturday onward. I guess I'm riding it out here and I imagine I'll chronicle the chaos both inside the apartment and around the neighborhood when the shit hits the fan. Or rather, after the shit has hit the fan and gone on its merry way. I am not going out in that.

Day 235: Not Here

Angry about my lenses. Worried about my skin problem. Hurt my neck. Anxious about work.

Don't expect much new cheer for a couple weeks. This will be the tough stretch for the project.

Day 234: Give and Take

The train station in North White Plains, commuter hub for our car trip back to Fredonia.

I am exhausted. Hopefully early to bed and early to rise, then swimming, and a long day at work. Lots of travel coming up, mixed feelings about that one.

Day 233: Burnham's Hollow

A cedar waxwing.

Once the rain stopped, we took an excursion to Burnham's Hollow in Arkwright, one of the family's more sacred places, owing to the long history there on the Cobb side, and it being the site of Colin and April's wedding. A truly beautiful day and wonderful way to mark my parents' 40 years of marriage.

Day 231: For Celebration

The farewell cake for our office's summer interns. Off to Fredonia for the weekend to celebrate my parents' 40th anniversary, father's 65th birthday and older brother's 35th birthday.

Day 228: Art is my Weapon

If you've noticed something of a literal turn here in this project, you're not the only one.

Day 227: Keep It Green

A garbage can on the New Haven Green. No, really, that's all.

Day 226: Shut In

Feels like a fall day today, cool and soaking wet. So I've mostly stayed in, and decided to start re-reading Faust, something I expect to also be much better ten years later thanks to age and higher literacy.

Day 225: Like Watercolor

I barely moved all day - recovering from an impressive, awesome and painful Friday night workout with Jacek. It was rough, but I need more challenges like that, made me feel a real sense of accomplishment to finish it.

Day 224: Framework World

Now that I'm swimming at John Jay, more of life revolves around Columbus Circle. And that's totally great.

Day 223: Safety Violations

I'm glad for the datestamp, confirms that this is indeed new graffiti and I haven't just not noticed it before.

Oh yeah... it points to the broken window.

Day 220: Commuter Sentence

New M8 arrives at New Haven station, with two previous generations of equipment in the background.

I feel like I've spent a lot of time on these trains lately.

Day 218: Unique Storage

I guess Manhattanites have to store their bike collections somewhere.

Day 217: Disaster Strikes

Presenting: the last photo I'll take with my 18-55mm lens for the foreseeable future, a not-great attempt to transpose the lobby lamp onto the outside awning.

Shortly after this was taken my camera fell to the sidewalk and the lens absorbed most of the damage. It isn't mounting on the body properly. The camera itself seems to be okay with my 55-200 but I'll get a better sense of that tomorrow in tests. And will take the whole thing in for diagnostics and repairs in a couple weeks when I can afford it.

Day 215: M8

I know, not the fanciest picture. For only the second time ever I got to ride in one of the new M8s on Metro-North's New Haven line. They are such a radical improvement it's not even funny. Quiet, pleasant, well-lit, electrical outlets... it's so much nicer to commute in a train built less than 40 years ago.

Day 214: Much to Fix

Forgive the bad photo. I spent most of my free evening figuring out the steps to fixing the next set of problems.

Nevertheless, this is an interesting artifact from a distant time in life.

Day 213: Back Across the Lake

Vacation is always too short.

Schroon was really delightful this year. Everyone has such cute babies / dogs / significant others /siblings.

I guess it was one of those moments to take stock of how much I'm changing, and to be glad to have old friends who can keep right up with it.
