Many years ago in New Haven we had a party night called "the last night on earth" as many of us were departing for various summer projects or jobs, and it was likely we'd not see each other again.
A couple years after that I deliberately broke several friendships because I thought I had to. And, to complete the process of pupation that was just beginning then in a final spiral toward my decision to end my academic career, I suppose I did in fact need to. But for the past six years I have missed those friends gravely, and felt a terrible wound in my soul for how I chose to deal with that situation.
This weekend I got a chance to start to fix it.

Day 308: Shot in the Dark
I really love New York. And I'm kind of astonished at how much it's changed me. Tonight for example I've sat at home feeling guilty and sad for not going out. Not that I ever go out on Fridays, because I'm always too tired, but for some reason today I've got this sense that I should be out on the town, forgetting my (numerous) cares. Alas, that's the plan for next weekend.
