Day 212: Skyfire

We didn't get the rich reds of last year's sunsets but they were still pretty impressive.

Day 211: Fun with Lenses

Got to borrow a cool wide-angle lens for a bit and got this shot of the beach and the dock.

Day 210: Arrival at Schroon

First night and first sunset at Schroon Lake are always a treat.

Day 209: Hackettstown

Step One of Schrooncation: NJ Transit to Hackettstown, to be picked up by Chris.

Hackettstown is home to the headquarters of Mars Chocolate.

Day 208: Grand Central

I'm back to weekly New Haven commutes for the time being, but was glad to snap this shot of a chandelier in Vanderbilt Hall at 6am today.

Day 207: Cellar Door

So if "cellar door" is the most beautiful phrase, where does "subway equipment room door" rank?

I really like this one, this ominous, dark, locked gate apparently to all points north of 127th Street.

Day 206: Life Finds A Way

Now they've got a tree growing right through the corrugated metal roof on the scaffold near the subway station.

Day 204: Collateral Damage

Apparently if you poke holes in the McKittrick Hotel, it bleeds a weird black tar. And blue paint.

SNM #7 was weird. The whole weekend has been weird. I guess it was a mistake for me to think it was going to be a fun celebration of being here for a year. It has instead turned out to be the stark reminder that even here, things are rough, transient, often disappointing.

Day 203: Doubtful

Matt makes an expression that sums up my own feelings. The heat has really messed with the photo project since I am hardly out and mobile right now.

Day 201: Qui Transtulit

Qui transtulit... ex re publicae Connecticutensis sustinet?

Day 200: Challenges Ahead

The anniversary, as well as other events, has stirred up a lot of emotions.

Just trying to fathom how much has changed, and how much I still want to remake.

Day 198: Glisten

I hope I have time to actually pay attention to my photos this week. It's my NYCversary - it'll be a year on Friday.

Things are a bit rough right now. There's a lot I have to get done to finally break the last tethers to the old world. And I've got to find a way to also break through some of the anxieties that linger that are keeping me from moving forward on some of the remaining challenges I set out for myself when I moved here.

Day 196: Holy Family

St. Joseph of the Holy Family, down where Convent (Morningside) meets 125.

Day 195: In the Fight

One of the 300 shots I took at our demonstration outside Lufthansa HQ today.

Day 194: Still'd

Fun with the flash in daylight.

Tomorrow begins what I expect will be the most challenging stretch of two work days I've had since I started my job last August. Great way to round out the year!

But then I have a date on Friday, and that date includes seeing Harry Potter 7-2. Yay!

Day 192: Dream Space

My own dream space would have a bit less rust, but that's just me I guess.

Day 191: Day at the Beach

Went to Long Beach today, wasn't paying attention to taking pictures, having too much fun getting pummeled by big waves, charred in the sun, and hanging out with some new friends.

Day 190: Weddings Call for Hats

Went up to Hamden today for Ricardo and Tom's wedding - the first gay wedding I've ever been to. It was really beautiful, and also striking how even people like me, who are deeply invested in social change, and pretty eager to upend some social order, can be dumbfounded in moments when suddenly a ritual is not what it has always been. I look forward to many more gay weddings to come.

Day 188: Schoolwork

Creepy and kind of awesome schoolyard graphics outside the PS on 133rd St. They make me think of the logo for the Culinary Union.

Day 187: Workaday

The view right out my office window. I think I can see myself taking this photo in the reflection.

Sorry for the dull subjects, my brain is completely shot this week.

Day 186: Southern Hospitality

This is somewhere in the Justin Timberlake-owned restaurant which has amazing pickle chips.

Monday, July 4, 2011

Day 185: Independence Day

Watched the fireworks from Nathan's rooftop in Hoboken. An amazing show. Last year, I was in my apartment in New Haven, starting to pack, and seeing an occasional burst of color on the horizon. It was my last real New Haven weekend - after that it was all weekends in the new apartment sleeping on an air mattress until the move. So now I've seen a calendar year here, and in less than 3 weeks will celebrate my anniversary.

Day 183: Oscar

I had a huge scare this morning when I let Colin and April's cats out of the bathroom, as within three minutes they were nowhere to be found. Drizz't turned up pretty quickly but it took me a good solid 45 minutes of panic to find Oscar, who'd been hiding under the refrigerator.

Day 182: Unforeseen Complications

So here's the picture that *I* took yesterday. I was hoping to have others of Colin and April's arrival and moving into their Brooklyn apartment, but then things got complicated. The other three photos, which Matt took, will tell that story.
