Day 120: An Egg for Zach

In the street, downtown.

Saw Yelle tonight and she was *amazing*

Day 119: Still No Sleep

Yes, I keep every card. This was #2. Very excited to be seeing the show tonight and escaping into the McKittrick...

... because Germany's been cancelled. That's partly a disappointment and largely a relief. I could use some time to be stationary and get my head together.

Day 118: Sunsetting

Saw the sun setting from the train, ran down to the river and managed to snap this.

My Germany trip, scheduled to start Saturday, is still completely up in the air. It's making me a nervous, unfocused wreck. But at least there's Sleep No More tomorrow night!

Day 117: Home Sweet Convent

Stayed in tonight after a bumpy - fun, educational, but bumpy - night out last night. Sitting here feeling a curious mix of envy and outrage, as usual.

Day 116: Out in Chelsea

So much on my mind and no time to process it. Hope I can turn it off long enough to get some rest.

Day 115: On the (Rail)road

My latest travels haven't even really begun and I'm already tired.

Day 114: Easter

Mel Gibson is appropriate for Easter, right?

Sorry about the blurriness, this is a small paint stencil in a corner.

Day 113: In a Café

Sat in a café and played Scrabble while the rain tapered off. Body is tired from a good swimming workout. Content.

Day 112: Wishful Thinking

Trying out the many different autofocus settings on my camera. Not sure why the noise was so bad.

Day 111: On Edge

Feeling very stressed out, despite making a lot of progress on work projects, and technically having Friday off.

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Day 110: Spring Springs

Spring would appear to have arrived, at last. It was 65 degrees out, and sunny. Every tree on 7th and 8th Avenues is in full bloom.

Day 109: Jesus Christ

This Waco pamphlet was left at my door a couple weeks ago and I saved it knowing I wanted to take a picture of it at some point, it's a lovely use of color. Also this is appropriate given the Easter holiday.

I'd love to digress onto my feelings about religion, but I'm pretty certain my opinions are both offensive and unhelpful so it's not really worth doing. We'll just leave it at how much I marvel at the question on the flyer, "How can you benefit?" It'd be nice if all the schools of enchanting just advertised themselves as such.

Day 108: Amistad

New Haven's Amistad memorial.

It's strange when I walk around New Haven now. There's not the weighty nostalgia that accompanies each step in Fredonia, or Oberlin. Instead I just feel a kind of solemn, breathless finality.

Day 107: Piece of Cake

This is a slice of the groom's cake, which was Lost-themed including the hatch, that chunk of leg there I believe belonged to Boone, whose bloody body was also prominently featured on the cake. At least two layers of the cake were made of cookie. Amazing.

Day 106: Wedding!

Looped back via Philadelphia to attend a wedding, which was really beautiful... and in an absolutely massive, incredible art deco space. There was plenty of distinctly Kubrickian lighting.

Day 105: Still Airborne

Fleeing the setting sun, my flight from SFO to Kansas City took off at dusk. Oakland was a blur. Kansas City proved entertaining when I got to the airport and realized they don't really do "taxis" so I decided to walk to the hotel, in the rain, before realizing that at airports they don't tend to have sidewalks. Fortunately the shuttle bus passed by and kindly offered me a ride.

Day 104: Nineteen

In the Newark Airport Airtrain at the start of my crazy travels.

Day 103: A Rare Sight

My own front door. It feels like I'm not here very much these days.

As I write this I'm editing Greece photos, unpacking, repacking, and stocking my iPad with goodies for the chain of airline insanity that starts tomorrow: EWR-PHX-OAK-SFO-MCI-CLE-PHL.

Still don't really have a plan for how to get from Philadelphia back home on Sunday but at least that's straightforward and on the ground. Oh yeah, then New Haven again on Monday.

Really looking forward to Tuesday when I get to swim again, and the weekend after that.

Day 102: Happyface

Spent today on an airplane headed home.

Trip has left me: exhausted, broke, not really relaxed... but very happy.

Monday, April 11, 2011

Day 101: Λυκαβηττός

Greece's flag flying atop Mount Lycabettus. Rare for a city of Athens' scale to have a mountain of this sort just sitting in the middle of the cityscape.

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Day 100: Lost Among Perdikans

Our third day in Greece, we took a ferry to the island of Aegina, which is about an hour from Athens. There we rented bicycles and rode south to a little town called Perdika, stopping along the way to swim in the (extremely) cold Saronic Gulf.

Day 99: Parthenonplussed

Ancient sites such as the Parthenon tend to be both overwhelming and underwhelming all at once – imagining their original use and condition is basically impossible, and so their grandeur seems almost entirely faded. And yet one can't help but marvel at the complexity and the execution that is still apparent.

Day 98: A Very Shiny Country

Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens. Foreground: some of the many flowers that made my allergies explode.

Day 97: In Flight

Yes, this picture is dull. It's all I could fit in to shoot as we flew off for four days in GREECE!

Day 96: Pre-Surprise(land)

Today is Matt's 30th birthday. My gift to him is that tomorrow we depart for an unknown destination, he'll find out where when we check in at the airport.

Accordingly: no posts until we return on Tuesday. Then immediately after that I'm off on a crazy, complicated trip to Oakland and back by way of Kansas City and Philadelphia. Whee!

Day 95: Traumhaft Schlaflos

Oh the magic of editing.

You will certainly recall Day 66 for my first photo of a Sleep No More mask.

In the intervening month (has it really only been that long?) my interest in the show has grown into full-blown enchantment. We went back on April 1 as part of Matt's birthday celebration, and last night I bought a ticket for April 29. As soon as more May dates open (provided this occurs) there'll be another visit while Greg is back in town.

The masks evoke some degree of association with Eyes Wide Shut. I unsurprisingly take that the next step and wonder about synergies with Traumnovelle. All three of these are narratives that exploit my relationship to my own voyeurism, and I'm continually surprised and impressed by the power of that. More to come on the Schnitzler aspect, which if present, is entirely accidental to the SNM production, but potentially incisive.

Also more to come, probably alongside a photo about something completely different, about what makes Sleep No More so incredible.

Day 93: Riverside

Spire of Riverside Church on my long, slow walk home from a very painful swim practice in Columbia's disturbingly warm pool. Spent the rest of the day trying to recover and stop hurting; read some Schnitzler and thought about Sleep No More a lot.

Day 92: Pillowfight

Hard to choose a photo from today's wonderful shooting, so the "selection" proper is the one that tells a story; namely, that we happened across the annual pillowfight on Union Square today and watched as a huge crowd smacked each other with pillows, sending feathers and cotton strands everywhere.

Then we went over to the Highline for some nice springtime shots.
